George Orwell's "1984" is a dystopian novel based on the topics of totalitarianism, surveillance, and personal liberty. The story is set in a future where a single-party government, ruled by Big Brother, governs society. The novel revolves around Winston Smith, a Party official who secretly keeps rebellious ideas in his heart. In this oppressive regime, all aspects of life are monitored, and autonomous thinking is an offense punishable by death. Winston's work entails falsification of historical records to conform to the Party's continually changing ideology. He nevertheless starts questioning the reality that has been presented to him. He engages in an illicit love affair with Julia, another rebel, and pursues truth in a world of perpetual propaganda. Winston's rebelliousness does not, however, remain hidden, and he is finally betrayed, arrested, and tortured by the Party. With Winston's experience, "1984" is a chilling commentary on the risks of unlimited government authority, monitoring, and the removal of individual freedoms.
